Restoration by Austin Finney | 2009 | Capturing Memphis series

acrylic paint on canvas | 18” x 24”

An attempt to capture the essence of the restoration process in historic architecture. A very noble act, to preserve historic examples of human expression and construction and ingenuity. Without the images, spaces, and places preserved, we lose a sense of our culture, identity, history, not to mention the beauty and brilliance of past human expression. Inspired by sights in downtown Memphis, TN, where people continue to restore and preserve this city’s culture, history, vibrance, and beautiful architecture.

Knoxville, TN | Design Studio Project | Fall 2012

Never thought I’d ever design… a birth center! But it has been an awesome experience. So enlightening to visit a birth center and hospital birth wing, interview with multiple experts on the subject. Needless to say, I have so much more respect for all women after learning about the sacrifices you make to bring life into this world!

Here are some process sketches and diagrams that led to my final design.  I’ll be posting the final design images soon.

Part of the epic parking garage of Univ. of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus that is now unfortunately demolished.  I’ll miss these awesome brutal concrete and brick spaces!

Stairs into the Presidential Courtyard of Univ. of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus.  Quite a nice space, though some argue it’s too much concrete, I feel like that was the best solution to provide a variety of spaces and maximum traversability.  Grass would never survive all the swag that surfs through there. Another throwback sketch from my 1st year of college!

The ampitheatre of Univ. of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus.  Awesome space to chill and study.  This throwback sketch was from the beginning of my freshman year!

Travel sketches from my visit to Rome for a few days in April.

Some of my first sketches from our visit to Villa di Verzegnis, Italy - the site of our design project this semester for our studio at Bauhaus University.  I tried to capture the large open space of the field, the views back to the village, the subtle enclosure of the space by the mountains and forested hills surrounding on all sides in the distance.  It was a beautiful place, one that I’ll never forget.

God’s will. Jesus’ command.

Sometimes, in pursuit of Christ, turning from the desires of the flesh and pursuing the God’s righteousness, it can still be difficult to be completely certain of what God’s will is for our lives in specific situations.

I want to choose God’s will over my will in every decision I face, because I know that He knows what is best for me and all the people in my life.

Recently, in reading John 15, God has shown me His guidance that clarifies His will in every decision, through what Jesus says and shows us through His own life.  And it is so beautifully true:

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.  If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in His love.  I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you…. This is my command: Love each other.”

John 15: 9 - 17
